Emergency department (E.D.) staff at St. Mary's Medical Center near Kansas City, Missouri, struggled to cope with increased patient volumes and falling patient satisfaction scores. The hospital’s existing systems were ill-equipped to accommodate all of the incoming patients, which resulted in high average length of stay (ALOS) and caused many patients to leave the E.D. before they had received treatment.
Utilizing a three-day Lean process improvement event, Envision Physician Services worked with the hospital to improve patient flow in the E.D. and to standardize key E.D. processes, leading to a 30 percent reduction in ALOS and an 88 percent reduction in left-without-being-seen (LWBS) rates.
